A Hoof Care Technician is responsible for providing specialized care and maintenance for the hooves of cattle. This includes trimming, cleaning, and treating hooves to maintain overall animal health, mobility, and well-being. The role requires knowledge of bovine anatomy, hoof care techniques, and the ability to identify and address hoof-related issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Trim and shape hooves to ensure proper alignment, weight distribution, and overall foot health, using specialized tools.
- Clean hooves, removing debris, dirt, and stones, and apply any necessary treatments or topical solutions to prevent infections and maintain hoof health.
- Identify signs of hoof conditions, such as cracks, thrush, or lameness, and recommend or perform appropriate treatments or interventions.
- Work with veterinarians and other animal care professionals to address complex hoof health issues and ensure optimal care for the animals.
- Provide guidance and advice to animal owners or farm managers on hoof care best practices, prevention, and treatment of common hoof issues.
- Maintain accurate records of hoof care treatments, including any observations or issues that require follow-up or further attention.
- Ensure proper care and maintenance of hoof care tools and equipment to ensure they remain in good working order.
- Monitor the movement and behavior of the animals, identifying any signs of discomfort or abnormality that may indicate hoof-related issues.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in hoof care
- Knowledge of bovine anatomy, hoof structure, and common hoof diseases or conditions.
- Skilled in using specialized hoof care tools, such as hoof knives, rasps, and nippers.
- Ability to assess hoof health and recommend or implement appropriate care measures.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent manual dexterity.
- Good communication skills to work with animal owners and veterinary professionals.
- Ability to work in outdoor conditions and physically demanding environments.
Education
- Degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Agricultural Studies, focus in Zootecnics, or a related field
